The UK government recognises the importance of workforce training for the growth of a competitive businesses sector. The life long learning programme is one of the methods that is being utilised to ensure that employees’ skills are kept up-to-date. Research conducted by the Department for Education and Skills revealed that there is reluctance from some organisations to update the skills of their employees. One of the reasons sighted was potential skills wastage, especially where employees have not had any formal training for some time.
